A rewind & a fast forward

ET goes in rewind and fast forward mode catches the pulse and trend of Bollywood in the gone decade and how it might shape up in the new decade.

2000 - Papa kehte hai bada naam karega: It was like a super-hit film script. A father, who in his avatar never hit the jackpot as an actor, launches his son who zooms straight into superhero-sphere. Truly, no father has created a bigger star in Bollywood than papa Rakesh Roshan when he launched son Hrithik in Kaho Naa Pyar Hai and has held his hand almost through the decade now.

2010 - Papa kehte hai bada naam karega: A slight difference in the script here. Legacy, looks and love were all there but no papa launches here. Ranbir Kapoor has escalated past others, a la Hrithik 10 years back — but all on his own steam. Yes, papa is very, very proud and the industry has heaved a sigh of relief as another star is born.

2001 - Kisan ki kahani, Aamir ki zubani: An underdog from the rural boondocks (read farmer-hero), a bat, a ball and a game, a swelling of national pride against a colonial backdrop... woven together created magic that took Indian mainstream cinema straight to the red carpet of Hollywood’s biggest night and raised the hope metre to snare an Oscar. Yes, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan did get us to a whisker away from the Big Ticket prize, but then for how long will we hope and to Slumdog it to the Oscars?

2011 - India ki kahani, Hollywood ki zubani: When all the stories that the West can churn out and all their Avatars are done, the West will tell India’s story in 3D, VFX: finally, the Force will be with us.

2002 - Lover as loser: But this script never fails to work at the box office and add a combination of SRK, Ash and Madhuri magic with a Sanjay Leela Bhansali-lens, add loads and loads of money and you have a super-hit Devdas on hands. Otherwise this was an imminently forgettable year but for a shroud of mystery over some weeks with a hint of Bipasha (Raaz) in it.

2012 - Love wins all: No Devdas tales anymore. Indian love stories will, in fact, sweep in more box office moolah from across the world... maybe not Avatar-style but close enough if possible!

2003 - Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge: The year that GeNext tossed Jai and Veeru back into their century as the new one took to Munna & Circuit in a scintillating story scripted by Raju Hirani. Applause was on par with jingling cash registers and this blockburster gave birth to Bollywood’s first franchise. For now, we will wait till Munna hits Amerika.

2013 - Moon watching: If cyrstal gazing is in the DNA of our movie makers, what’s a trip to the moon for our stars? So, why not let Munna take a trip to the Moon?
